THE JOHANNESBURG DIARIES - GROWING UP - #BLOGCHATTERA2Z2023

Growing up always meant getting bigger and doing the things we always dreamt of doing, like driving, voting, drinking, late nights etc. How often have we heard little ones saying, “Oh, I wish I was grown up!” I always pat them on their shoulders and reply, “Believe me, growing up brings along with it its own set of problems. Enjoy your childhood while it lasts!”

However, growing up does not always mean that the person has really grown up. There are those wonderful folk who make maturity look like a trek in the higher slopes of the Himalayas. They may be six feet tall, but their ideas and their thoughts remain tethered to the plains, if I may say so plainly. Sometimes they can be endearing in their childishness, but at other times, not so much!

Then there are the others who may be young in years but have a wise head on those shoulders. These folk can be quite scary because you have to choose your words carefully. They know more than you know, and quite frankly, do not mind showing it. All very well but conversing with a walking encylopaedia can be quite exhausting.

My one tenet on the subject is simple. “Even though you’re growing up, you should never stop having fun.” That is immensely doable if you can find joy in little things. Another quote I dearly cherish goes this way...

“Happiness is the art of picking those flowers within reach.” Not that I approve of picking flowers because they look more beautiful on their bushes, but you get the general idea, I’m sure!

When we came to Johannesburg, we looked forward to being with our little ones. Z is the gentlest soul going, but S is the life and soul of the party. What fills our hearts with joy is the fact that they endear themselves to all those who meet them. They have curious minds and enjoy adding nuggets of wisdom to their repertoire, but they can also turn into two little balls of energy spinning around till they are reprimanded. They fight like cats and dogs, but the moment one of them is in any kind of trouble, the other rallies around, fiercely protective.

This morning, I found Z in tears early in the morning after a conversation with her mom. The reason was because Mom declared that Z was seven going on seventeen… a teenager. Z obviously does not like the thought of being a teenager. Maybe because every time she throws a tantrum, though it is rare, she is told, “Stop behaving like a teenager!”

There is a time and season for everything. There are various stages in life that every person must go through, from childhood to old age. No one could have put this across more beautifully than the Bard himself in his ‘Seven Ages of Man’.

Here is a beautiful rendition of the same by the amazing Morgan Freeman. Do click on the link below if you want to share the experience.
