THE JOHANNESBURG DIARIES - OMG AND OOO-LA-LA-LA - #BLOGCHATTERA2Z2-23

Talk about enunciation and our little S comes to mind… our three year-old going on four whose vocabulary quite stumps us, now and then. His older sister, Z, has just begun to read which is a matter of great pride, especially when she handles three and sometimes, four-letter words as well. Since we are a family of readers, this step is of extreme significance to us all.

S tries to imitate his big sis in every way, though of course, there are times when she turns into him, which is hilarious. However, that is sauce enough for later on in this post.

To get back to S’s antics… there we were, sitting and relaxing at home, while the two were busy with their LEGO. Suddenly we heard S, loud and clear. “Oh My God!” The syllables were throaty, clear and erupted as from a foghorn. We burst into peals of laughter, which then prompted him to carry on saying it, whenever something amazed him, or tickled him or piqued him. Which was practically all the time!

The next instance which was even funnier was when he was watching something on his iPad, and he suddenly went, “Ooo La La La!” in a manner that was quite sweet, soft and suggestive, his shoulders sidling along with every syllable, the cutest take on the phrase I have ever heard in my life. 😊 The moment he realized that we were enjoying it, there he was, twisting and sidling for all he was worth, repeating it incessantly.

Both Z and S are natural dancers who love gyrating to the songs they love. Again, given that the whole family enjoys music, these two have a vast repertoire and what amazes us is the fact they can identify a song by listening to its opening bars.

While S is an out-and-out showman, Z needs to be coaxed occasionally. So yesterday, it was absolutely refreshing when she suddenly shed her inhibitions and turned into a clone of S for a while, rushing around the room and performing for all she was worth. We term these the ‘Vidamatte’ or the ‘Thangabali’ moments, both iconic ones from the movies ‘Manichitrathazha’ (the Malayalam original of Bhool Bhulaiyya) and the popular ‘Chennai Express’.

Of course, our canine friend, Bronn, too has these moments often when he runs around in crazy circles, a wet string hanging out of his grinning mouth! 😊 The most excited he gets is when we come home after an outing to find him thrusting his head out through his peephole at the bottom of the front door.

Thus, there is no lack of entertainment in Johannesburg. As grandparents, our hearts swell with happiness when we spend precious moments with the little ones. Every day we learn something new from them… but what is priceless is the impulsive hugs, the little cards they draw for us, the way they draw us into their tiny battles and of course, the fact that they do love us as much as we do them. Being Mooma and Nana are roles we love playing to the hilt.
