KINDLE OR PRINT? #BLOGCHATTERA2ZCHALLENGE

From childhood onwards, I have been fascinated by books, having grown up in their midst. My grandparents were readers, my parents avid book buffs who could not leave a book store without buying something. That quality runs in my genes, no doubt. If I were given a choice between a boutique, a bookshop and a gold shop, guess where I would end up? No doubt at all, the book shop. Or a library!

Those days were simple. You bought a book that you yearned for, you touched it with reverence, took in its fresh fragrance and wrote your name with pride. It was yours to love and cherish forever. The more books you had, the happier you were.

I met my future husband in our own home library. I was the strict librarian, and after college hours I would sit and wait for people to come and take books. It was mostly friends and family. That was when this dashing young Army officer walked in to borrow a book, and the rest is history... or in my case, her story!

The gene continued to make its presence felt as P too developed a close bond with books and reading.

Today, eBooks are all the rage. There was a time when I refused to even consider the idea of reading on a device. However, sometimes you tend to move forward, and the day I realised that I could get a monumental library in that tiny device, I turned over a new leaf. I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited and now I find that with a nominal fee, I can read all the books I want, which gives me a sense of security, I guess.

Zo and Sam also enjoy their books. Zo has reached Book 12 of The Wimpy Kid. I find myself wondering about modern choices that children make today. From heroes like Krishna, Rama, Rani Lakshmibai and Birbal or Hercules, Sherlock Homes, Helen Keller and Alexander the Great to sagas about a Wimpy Kid, a rat named Geronimo Stilton and Dork Diaries, what a change has been there, my countrymen!

                                                                                           Amazon.in

                                                                                            Amazon.co.za

Sam enjoys puzzles and looking for Wally, a tiny character who gets lost in a crowd. When I asked him about his favourite book, his reply was, "I like to watch Zo reading the Wimpy Kid books. So that's my favourite."

Back to the selfsame question! Which is better? Print books or eBooks?

For the sheer love of reading, a physical book which can be touched and savoured!

                                                                                                 Goodreads

For the sake of convenience and a greater choice of books, an eBook which can be carried and read anywhere.

Radio Times

After all, which came first? The hen or the egg? Who cares? Both serve their purpose, don’t they!

I am participating in the #BlogchatterA2ZChallenge.

  2. The anecdote about meeting your husband in the home library is so heartwarming—it truly feels like a scene from a romance novel. Your journey from cherishing the tactile joy of physical books to embracing the convenience of eBooks like Kindle Unlimited is so relatable because I've embraced that same transition and now am a complete ebook reader. It's fascinating to see how reading habits evolve across generations. Ultimately, as you beautifully put it, both formats serve their purpose and enrich our reading experiences.

  3. I love this post. Kindle or Print version - the choice is actually relative. Kindle is easier while I travel. Print version suits me best when I'm in the cozy corner of my room or enjoying the breeze from my balcony! You have presented the topic so well through that magical touch of storytelling!

  4. "That was when this dashing young Army officer walked in to borrow a book, and the rest is history... or in my case, her story!" It was such a romantic tale! Just like watching a movie! You must write a long piece dedicated to this one. And your love for books kindled a long forgotten dream in me, Ma'am. Seeking your blessing so that I can fulfill this dream some day. - Swarnali Nath
