Robert Herrick – To The Maidens, to Make Much of Time

This is a poem that needs very little explanation. Robert Herrick talks about taking advantage of life and seizing the moment (Carpe Diem). Life is meant to be lived joyfully. This was a concept that Longfellow brought out in his Psalm For Life when he spoke of our hearts, though stout and brave, like muffled drums beating funeral marches to the grave.

Voices echoed around him, and he could feel the vibration as people jogged along the beach, and his sightless eyes turned towards the movement. He had been coming to this spot for many months now, ever since he had shifted to Mumbai, after his mother had passed away.  The sound of the sea evoked a vision that he could only feel, not see. He could smell the delicious puris that Ram Prasad was frying, very near to where he sat. Every day the cheerful proprietor would look for a moment when there were few customers, and hand over a plate of piping hot puris and delicious potato curry to the gentle blind man who sat there, so young and so uncomplaining!                                                                                                                                                               Youtube Sudesh

The Girl Who Met Her Match

       Pixabay The little match girl looked wistfully at the beautifully decorated window of the departmental store, was bathed in light. “Oh, it looks like Paradise!” she breathed, as she blew on her frozen hands. The willowy mannequins stood in gowns that would have cost a fortune. The little girl stared, entranced, at a smaller mannequin clad in a dress covered with silver and red flowers, along with a tiara. “Shoo, girl, move from that window! You will keep away our customers!” The loud voice startled her. It belonged to an overweight gentleman in the business of opening the store door to opulent clients. The girl cast one last, longing glance at the dress. She melted away in the darkness. Her tattered bag held a few more match boxes which she had to sell to make enough money to buy a sparse meal. “Matches for you, Sir, Ma’am?” she quavered as a couple sauntered by, They gave her a disdainful glance.
