THE JOY OF COLOURS - #MYFRIENDALEXA 2021 - GOLDEN

 GOLDEN

She was driving at full speed now. The sun shone down, fierce and golden.

The words of the doctor were echoing in her mind.

“Ms. Deshpande, you have a growth in your stomach. I am afraid it is malignant which gives you less than six months to live.” His voice was grave, and she found herself wondering why he needed to put on an act. After all, he was in the profession of doling out bad news.

She had unfinished work. She was on her way to remedy that. Especially now that she was living on borrowed time.

The sunrays filled the car with golden warmth.

She rang the bell. He stood there, handsome as ever, and her treacherous heart skipped a beat. How could she still be so gullible after what he had done to her.

“Hi, Sonia, how stunning you look!” The words flowed like honey, golden and glib.

She smiled at him. “Thank you, Derek! Always the charmer, aren’t you?”

He ushered her in, the charm washing over her, as it had always done.

“Sit down! Let me get you a cup of filter coffee.” As the aroma of brewing coffee assailed her nostrils, she made a quick phone call.

He knew her so well. Why wouldn’t he? They had lived together for years till he decided to marry the daughter of a wealthy businessman.

“That will be a marriage of convenience,” he had promised. “You are the one who holds my heart. You know that.”

She did know that. She was like a heady drug to him. He could never think of letting her go. Even though he had broken her heart myriad times by cheating on her. A layer of ice had encased her heart every time.

As she sipped the coffee, they made desultory conversation. He put his arm around her, his voice animated as she watched him from under her eyelashes.

“Could I have a sandwich? I am starving,” she said, smiling at him.

“Of course, sweetheart. Your favourite ham sandwich coming up!” He whistled as he bustled around, toasting the bread to perfection.

She took the little vial from her bag. It had cost her quite a bit to get the right one.

One more final phone call! Then it was time.

She tipped the contents of the vial into her mouth. The six months she had left dissolved away into nothingness.

As he buttered the golden toast, nonchalantly humming a tune under his breath, he heard the sirens in the distance, little aware that they were making a beeline to his door.

  12. it's just momentary decisions that leads to radical steps. I can't say that i'm happy with the ending but i don't know how else could you have justified the story.
