He was a young lad who wanted to stand out,

Be special in some way or the other,

Often, he wished he could stand outside and shout

What was deep within his heart, be more like his brother.

“Be gallant and brave,” his brother always told him

“Make our parents proud, you are the chosen one to do so!”

He pored over those words; was it just a whim?

Was he really the chosen one? The one to do more?

In school, he was the naughtiest one of all,

Never able to stay still, a whirlwind of a child;

Often ‘outstanding’ – listening from outside the hall,

He received chides galore, both strict and mild.

His brother was the perfect role model, oh yes, he was!

Academically inclined, a sportsman to the hilt,

Uproars, issues, flare-ups, he was never the cause,

Gentleman to the core, that’s how he was built.

The young one had a mind of his own, mind you!

He played truant from school, and his close friends followed suit,

His parents berated him, saying, “Is this what we’ve taught you?”

He ignored their complaints; he cared not a hoot!

Our young man, however, looked up to his older sibling,

Yet, his enthusiasm could not be curbed, however much he tried,

He looked around jauntily, unafraid of anything,

The world was his oyster, welcoming and wide!

One day, when he returned from college, and walked in,

He realized that it was time to turn a new leaf,

His father sat, motionless, hand on his chin

His mother seemed a statue, bent over with grief.

The telegram sat on the table, its words cruel and bald,

He read the words in disbelief, his heart beating aloud,

His brother, and Army officer, had from the world been recalled,

While the family wept, the Nation stood proud.

When the formalities were done, the young man stood, head bowed,

Heart-broken, as he watched his parents silently mourn.

Pride reigned supreme, but over them all loomed a cloud,

While the world lauded the hero, they had lost their own.
