BRIDE, BRAAI AND BIRTHDAY PLANS! #BlogchatterA2ZChallenge

We landed up in Johannesburg just in time for P's and V's 12th wedding anniversary. Our memories flew back to those four days of revelry when our only daughter tied the knot. We began with the Ganesh Puja which started the occasion on an auspicious note, the haldi that is more of a North Indian custom, and a sangeet, replete with music, dance, drama and fun, culminating in the wedding itself, followed by a reception hosted by the bridegroom’s side in which the bride and groom were ‘roasted’, as the term now goes.

The 12th anniversary was an excuse to host a braai for the whole family. As usual, the braai master was V, who did the honours with his varieties of moist meat and savoury sausages replete with compound butter, while P laid out a course of buttery potato salad and green vegetables. Rolls toasted on the grill completed the repast, leaving people licking their lips and looking forward to a welcome siesta.

What was as appetizing as the braai was the fun and bonhomie as the family got together to ask intriguing questions to the others, including the anniversary couple, the answers of which were fun and yet, went deep into the psyche as well. It was a cloudy day, perfect for a braai. The sun had decided to take a break, and a sprinkling of raindrops broke the monotony.

As the grownups sat around chatting and nibbling, the little ones stuck marshmallows on sticks and heated them over the fire, and enjoyed their s’mores. I had no idea that the word ‘s’more’ was a contraction for ‘some more’, and that the recipe first appeared in a ‘Campfire Marshmallows’ cookbook in the 1920s – a truly American dessert. These were originally known as Graham Cracker Sandwiches. That’s a delicious slice of history, isn’t it?

Come evening, it was time to talk about Zo's birthday, which is round the corner.

Zo wants to take her school friends to Bounce, a place with trampolines where they can bounce around to their hearts’ content. The celebrations will continue on another day when the family and friends will be treated to a Padel party. Padel is a sport that has caught on rapidly around the world and is believed to be a cocktail of squash and tennis, if I have it right. Zo’s excitement is slowly hitting the roof, but that's a tale for another day!

  4. I can feel Zo's excitement already. Btw, thanks for that slice of history about S'mores. The original one somehow makes me think of ice cream sandwiches. Lol
