GOING TO SCHOOL! #BLOGCHATTERA2ZCHALLENGE

Today was the first day of school for Zo and Sam since we had landed up. They were up at 6, and as P drank her first cup of green tea, Zo took out two hangers and kept her uniform and Sam's neatly, something which revealed how much she had grown up since her last birthday. Breakfast done, they both got dressed, Sam's excitement palpable as he wore his brand-new jersey. P whispered that he had been wearing Zo's old jersey, two sizes larger than required till now. To give him credit, he did not complain even once.

They left at ten to seven. P and Nana went to drop them off. I was home alone with the two crazy critters, who were busy fighting over their bone, the couch and general world politics. One screaming bout over, the dogs lay down in their respective corners and I suddenly realised that Zo and Sam would be only back around 3.30... almost a whole day away.

Even after P and Nana got back, the house was quiet. We missed the kids' chatter, the constant snacking, the climbing over the dogs and the hustle and the bustle. The silence continued, punctuated only by the sound of the television and an occasional phone call. My writing got over in record time, and P was busy with her work, attending meetings and working on her content.

Lunch over, we took a quick siesta, aware that in the next one hour, the house would be back to its normal high decibel levels, with four kids instead of two as the two cousins, K and I, had also been picked up along with Zo and Sam. The house came alive as P drove into the driveway, and four excitable souls trundled out, with vociferous greetings and an account of what had transpired in school. The dogs went crazy as well, and amidst a plethora of yelps and screaming, Zo and Sam went in for a shower, Zo having had netball practice at school, which had left her sweaty, exhausted, but happy.

Calm was restored in a while as the four sat down to lunch, with Bronn and Archie trying to cast sneaky glances at the food that they never get to taste. There is a specific dog food diet for them and V is a strict disciplinarian who believes that two meals a day go down well with them. He shakes his head at scraps off the table, or bones being sneakily crunched. Our hearts do melt occasionally, as we offer a covert titbit to the apparently hungry twosome, but then, we do understand V’s viewpoint as well. For the day after, when he rises with the sun, as fresh as a daisy, one look at the stinky offerings placed artistically on the floor of the lounge does tend to douse his spirits, and who can blame him for that? Imagine waking up to a daily dose of that? The poor early bird, in this case, catches the turd!

School evenings are very different from weekends. By four, Zo and Sam are head down, doing their homework. At the beginning I was flabbergasted to know that both have to learn four languages – English, French, Afrikaans and Zulu. It is said that children pick up languages faster than adults too, and I now agree with it whole-heartedly.

                                                                                                    Chinese for Children

Talking of ducks, there is a little toy that Zo received for her birthday called Tamagotchi which has to be fed, made to poop, entertained and put to sleep. It is to teach children how to take care of pets, I believe. This toy grows every day, adding invisible years and pounds to its age and weight. This is akin to tending to plants, I guess. You over water them and they die on you. Happens a lot to me, and some of my friends as well!

The end of a school day comes faster than that of a weekend. Zo and Sam are packed off to bed the moment dinner is done, around eightish, give and take a few moments of reluctance sometimes, hugs every time and the difficult decision about whether to sleep in their own beds or those of their parents.

Finally, their day is done and in the words of Thomas Gray, it is time to “leave the world to darkness and to me.”

  2. I just read your "Going to School!" post, and it brought back so many memories! Your description of Zo and Sam's first day back captures that mix of excitement and nervousness perfectly. The quiet house after they left really highlights how much energy kids bring into a home. I chuckled at the dogs' antics and their attempts to sneak food—classic! The language learning part is impressive; four languages at once is no small feat. And the Tamagotchi mention? Total nostalgia trip!
