JARVIS AND HIS LABOURS! #BLOGCHATTERA2ZCHALLENGE

One button on, and there he goes, whirring about as he assiduously cleans the floor… that’s Jarvis, the RoboGem Self Emptying Vacuum Cleaner for you. Jarvis, for short!

With two kids, two hairy dogs, one set of parents, and to add, one extra set of grandparents, there is no doubt that Jarvis has his work cut out for him. The dog hair is enough to clog his insides, and probably, create a whole new fur coat as well. Dog hair is like precipitation… it waits in the air, hovering around till it spots a squeaky-clean floor. “That’s my spot!” it whoops, and descends gently on the grey couches, later to hitch a ride on our black jeans, tops, sweaters, whichever is available.

So obviously, Jarvis is a popular little creature, whirring for all he is worth. The first few days were a trifle confrontational, with Bronn (he was the only resident dog at the time!), wondering who the noisy new resident was, that went after him on target, as he tip-toed his way across the lounge. At the end of each elaborate clean-up, Jarvis would go and empty itself in its custom-made trash bag, making a racket to ensure that no one in the house missed his diligent activity.

Now, with Archie having been added on to the canine list at home, there is double the amount of dog hair, and Jarvis goes around in circles, trying to recover it all. Since Archie is a natural chewer of everything in sight, there are remnants of oranges, erasers, wooden chips, snack packets, toys, candies, all punctuated with dollops of saliva on the floor. As I mentioned earlier, Jarvis has his work cut out!

Of course, Jarvis is not the only one who cleans the house. On two days, Rhoda comes in and does an amazing job the whole day, washing, cleaning, mopping, drying, ironing and polishing. When she leaves in the evening, the house smells unbelievable, and every inch of space sparkles like a new pin, the dog hair still in the process of hovering.

V gets the privilege of cleaning what comes out after what goes in; early morning offerings both inside and outside the house, an unenviable job, indeed. P sweeps and mops once, twice, sometimes thrice a day, depending on how active the participants at home have been. Doing dishes is a chore fought over… it is a pleasure to wash them in hot soapy water in the dead of winter, which keeps one snug and warm! The only problem is that the tap behaves in a strange fashion, like something out of the Harry Potter series. It groans and moans like Moaning Myrtle, sometimes thundering its way into oblivion, which could get creepy, especially at night.

When Zo and Sam play in their room, it often appears like they have been caught in a snowstorm, which is understandable for they put their hearts and souls into the chaos they create. The rule is that everyone cleans the mess he or she makes… which includes the kids. The grandparents try and do the same, but it ends up in a bit of a world war as P puts her foot down because she wants them to relax and enjoy themselves, which they do, in any case.

The battle continues as Jarvis sets off on his daily mountainous task, plodding along, a lone warrior, against a mighty army of humans and canines. Much like the Greek myth of the Labours of Hercules, not the least of which was cleansing the Augean Stables of its enormous mounds of dung!

Of course, the secret to a squeaky-clean house has always remained the same!

  1. Jarvis sounds like a real hero around the house! I loved reading about all the funny little battles he fights every day—especially with the dog hair and snacks. Comparing his chores to Hercules' labors was such a fun touch.
