THE JOHANNESBURG DIARIES - JEEVES AND JARVIS - #BLOGCHATTERA2Z2023

When I was growing up, one of my favourite writers was PG Wodehouse, or Plum, as he was colloquially known. Many times people would stare at me as I sat in a public place, chuckling over the antics of Lord Emsworth or PSmith. However, the characters who cracked me up most were Bertie Wooster and his sagacious valet, Jeeves, who was the one who sorted out all the former’s issues, large and small, to the extent of rescuing him from the clutches of women who were not suited to Bertie’s personality.
IMDbAnother impressive butler was Charles Ernest Carson from Downton Abbey, a man who ruled the staff with an iron hand and disapproved of any frivolity downstairs. He played a significant role in bringing out the stark class distinctions between the nobility and the ones who served them.

Jarvis, of course, was Tony Stark’s butler in the Iron
Man from the Marvel Comics series. He was loyal and ready to do anything for
his master and the Stark family. In the movie version, J.A.R.V.I S.
metamorphosed into an AI programme whose acronym stood for ‘Just A Very
Intelligent System’. This only goes to prove what a significant role AI plays
in the modern world.
When we landed in Johannesburg, we were pleasantly
surprised to meet our very own JARVIS at home… a round little contraption that is
a self-emptying Robotic Vacuum Cleaner -2023 Model. What that translates to is
a circular vacuum cleaner that has its own charging dock with a dust box.

To make this a bit clearer, Jarvis is a smart vacuum
cleaner who goes around the room following an orbit as it picks up dirt
particles, swerving around obstacles as it plods along doing its own thing. The
first time it moved, our dog, Bronn, almost jumped out of his skin. Initially,
he looked at JARVIS with a decidedly jaundiced eye. Once he got used to it, he
turned his nose up and let it alone.
JARVIS does an
amazing job of cleaning the house, building maps of your home for efficient
cleaning. Its motor has a strong suction power which makes it a cakewalk for its
cleaning system. The dust gets sucked into a dust bag that can be emptied out
when required.
For the first few days, we were fascinated by the way the
little contraption went round earnestly doing its bit. There were times when it
did get a trifle confused by something on its route, but it always rallied
around and carried on like a little champ. Once the cleaning was done, JARVIS
would go back to its charging dock and plug itself back on.
There are times when I am cooking and JARVIS decides to
clean the kitchen causing me to do a tap dance around it, as it winds about my
feet and has me going round in circles. It is actually very amusing. In fact, I have got rather fond of waltzing
with JARVIS!
